How To Save Battery Life

Fast phone power saving for emergency situations.

Android version: these tips are tailored to the most common Android settings and are meant to help you stretch battery life in a practical, low-friction way. They focus on battery saver modes, wireless radios, data control, and the few changes that give the biggest real-world gain when every percentage point matters.

Turn on Battery Saver Mode

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Activates a special mode that reduces battery use across the whole phone.

Implementation

Swipe down from the top of the screen twice to open Quick Settings > Tap the Battery Saver icon (looks like a battery with a leaf or plus sign). If you do not see it: Open Settings > Tap Battery > Tap Battery Saver > Tap Use Battery Saver

Reason

Battery Saver limits background activity, reduces visual effects, slows down the processor, and disables non-essential features, which can extend battery life by 15-30%.

Turn on Airplane Mode in weak signal areas

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Stops the phone from constantly searching for a network signal.

Implementation

Swipe down from the top of the screen twice to open Quick Settings > Tap the Airplane Mode icon (looks like an airplane)

Reason

When signal is weak, the phone uses maximum power searching for cell towers. Airplane mode stops all radio activity, which is the biggest power drain in low-signal areas.

Lower screen brightness

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Makes the screen darker, which uses much less power.

Implementation

Swipe down from the top of the screen once > Find the brightness bar (sun icon) > Drag the slider to the left with your finger until the screen is dim but still readable

Reason

The screen is one of the largest battery consumers. Reducing brightness by half can significantly cut power use throughout the day.

Turn off Wi-Fi when not in use

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Stops your phone from constantly searching for Wi-Fi networks.

Implementation

Swipe down from the top of the screen twice to open Quick Settings > Tap the Wi-Fi icon so it becomes gray or crossed out

Reason

Even when not connected, Wi-Fi continuously scans for available networks, draining battery. Turning it off completely stops this activity.

Turn off Bluetooth

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Stops the phone from looking for wireless devices like headphones.

Implementation

Swipe down from the top of the screen twice to open Quick Settings > Tap the Bluetooth icon so it becomes gray or crossed out

Reason

Bluetooth continuously scans for nearby devices, consuming power even when no device is connected.

Shorten screen timeout

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Makes the screen turn off faster when you stop using the phone.

Implementation

Open Settings > Tap Display (on Samsung phones, may be under Display & Brightness) > Tap Screen Timeout (or Sleep) > Tap 15 seconds or 30 seconds

Reason

The screen uses significant power when on. A shorter timeout reduces unnecessary screen-on time when you set the phone down.

Turn off Always On Display

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Stops the screen from showing time and notifications when locked.

Implementation

Open Settings > Tap Display (or Lock Screen on Samsung) > Tap Always On Display > Tap the switch so it turns gray (off)

Reason

Always On Display keeps part of the screen lit constantly, using battery 24 hours a day. Turning it off can save 5-10% of battery per day.

Turn off Location (GPS)

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Stops apps from using GPS to track where you are.

Implementation

Swipe down from the top of the screen twice to open Quick Settings > Tap the Location icon (looks like a teardrop pin) so it becomes gray. If not visible: Open Settings > Tap Location > Tap the switch at the top so it turns gray (off)

Reason

GPS is one of the most power-hungry features. Many apps request location even in the background, which drains battery quickly.

Switch from 5G to 4G/LTE

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Uses an older, more efficient mobile network.

Implementation

Open Settings > Tap Network & Internet (or Connections on Samsung) > Tap SIMs (or Mobile Networks) > Tap your SIM card > Tap Preferred Network Type > Tap LTE or 4G

Reason

5G networks consume more battery than 4G/LTE because of higher data speeds and more antenna activity. LTE provides good speed while using less power.

Turn off Adaptive Brightness

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Stops the phone from automatically adjusting screen brightness.

Implementation

Open Settings > Tap Display > Tap the switch next to Adaptive Brightness (or Auto Brightness) so it turns gray (off)

Reason

Adaptive brightness uses the light sensor constantly and often sets brightness higher than needed. Manual control lets you keep it as low as possible.

Restrict background app activity

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Stops apps you rarely use from running in the background.

Implementation

Open Settings > Tap Battery > Tap Battery Usage (or See All Apps) > Tap an app you do not need > Tap Restricted (or Background restriction)

Reason

Many apps continue running in the background, using data and battery. Restricting them prevents power drain from apps you do not actively use.

Turn off vibration and haptic feedback

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Stops the phone from buzzing for calls, notifications and key presses.

Implementation

Open Settings > Tap Sound & Vibration (or Sounds and Vibration) > Tap Vibration & Haptics > Tap each switch to turn off Vibration for Calls, Notifications, and Touch Feedback

Reason

The vibration motor uses significantly more power than playing a sound. Disabling vibration saves battery on every notification and screen tap.

Enable Dark Mode

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Changes screen background to black, which saves power on most modern phones.

Implementation

Open Settings > Tap Display > Tap Dark Theme (or Dark Mode) > Tap the switch so it turns blue (on)

Reason

Phones with OLED or AMOLED screens (most modern Android phones) use less power to display black pixels. Dark mode can save 10-20% battery.

Turn off NFC

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Stops the phone's contactless payment chip from running.

Implementation

Swipe down from the top of the screen twice to open Quick Settings > Tap the NFC icon so it becomes gray. If not visible: Open Settings > Tap Connected Devices (or Connections) > Tap Connection Preferences > Tap NFC > Tap the switch so it turns gray (off)

Reason

NFC continuously scans for nearby payment terminals and tags. Disabling it removes a small but constant battery drain.

Turn off Hey Google voice assistant

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Stops the phone from constantly listening for voice commands.

Implementation

Open the Google app > Tap your profile picture in the top-right > Tap Settings > Tap Google Assistant > Tap Hey Google & Voice Match > Tap the switch next to Hey Google so it turns gray (off)

Reason

Hey Google keeps the microphone active at all times to detect the wake phrase, which continuously uses small amounts of battery power.
