How To Save Battery Life

Fast phone power saving for emergency situations.

iPhone version: these tips are tailored to iOS and are meant to help you keep the phone alive for as long as possible in stressful situations. The focus is on radio use, location, background processes, and other settings that usually deliver the biggest battery savings with the least effort.

Turn on Low Power Mode

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Activates a special mode that reduces battery use across the whole phone.

Implementation

Open Settings > Tap Battery > Tap the switch next to Low Power Mode so it turns green

Reason

Low Power Mode reduces background activity, pauses email fetching, lowers screen brightness, disables visual effects, and limits processor speed, which can extend battery life by up to 30%.

Turn on Airplane Mode in weak signal areas

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Stops the phone from constantly searching for a network signal.

Implementation

Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Center > Tap the orange airplane icon so it turns orange

Reason

When signal is weak, the phone uses maximum power to find and maintain a connection to cell towers. Airplane mode stops all radio activity, which is the biggest drain on the battery.

Lower screen brightness

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Makes the screen darker, which uses much less power.

Implementation

Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Center > Find the brightness bar (sun icon) > Drag it down with your finger until the screen is dim but still readable

Reason

The screen is one of the largest battery consumers on the phone. Reducing brightness by 50% can significantly cut power use.

Turn off Wi-Fi when not in use

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Stops your phone from constantly searching for Wi-Fi networks.

Implementation

Open Settings > Tap Wi-Fi > Tap the switch at the top so it turns gray (off)

Reason

Even when not connected, Wi-Fi continuously scans for available networks, which drains battery. Turning it off completely stops this activity.

Turn off Bluetooth

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Stops the phone from looking for wireless devices like headphones.

Implementation

Open Settings > Tap Bluetooth > Tap the switch at the top so it turns gray (off)

Reason

Bluetooth continuously scans for nearby devices to pair with, which consumes power even when no device is connected.

Shorten screen timeout (Auto-Lock)

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Makes the screen turn off faster when you stop using the phone.

Implementation

Open Settings > Tap Display & Brightness > Tap Auto-Lock > Tap 30 Seconds

Reason

The screen uses significant power when on. Locking it sooner reduces unnecessary screen-on time when the phone is set down.

Turn off Always On Display (iPhone 14 Pro and newer)

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Stops the screen from showing time and notifications when locked.

Implementation

Open Settings > Tap Display & Brightness > Tap Always On Display > Tap the switch at the top so it turns gray (off)

Reason

Always On Display keeps part of the screen lit even when the phone is locked, continuously using battery. Disabling it can save 5-10% per day.

Turn off Background App Refresh

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Stops apps from updating themselves when you are not using them.

Implementation

Open Settings > Tap General > Tap Background App Refresh > Tap Background App Refresh again at the top > Tap Off

Reason

Apps refresh content in the background to stay updated, which uses data and processor power. Disabling this stops all background activity and can dramatically extend battery life.

Turn off Location Services

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Stops apps from using GPS to track where you are.

Implementation

Open Settings > Tap Privacy & Security > Tap Location Services > Tap the switch at the top so it turns gray (off) > Tap Turn Off to confirm

Reason

GPS is one of the most power-hungry features. Many apps request location even when not in use, constantly draining the battery.

Switch from 5G to LTE (4G)

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Uses an older, more efficient mobile network.

Implementation

Open Settings > Tap Cellular (or Mobile Data) > Tap Cellular Data Options > Tap Voice & Data > Tap LTE

Reason

5G networks consume more battery than 4G/LTE due to higher data speeds and more complex antenna usage. LTE provides adequate speed while using less power.

Turn off Raise to Wake

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Stops the screen from turning on every time you pick up the phone.

Implementation

Open Settings > Tap Display & Brightness > Find Raise to Wake > Tap the switch so it turns gray (off)

Reason

Raise to Wake activates the screen with every movement, causing unnecessary screen-on time and battery use throughout the day.

Turn off Vibration

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Stops the phone from buzzing for calls and notifications.

Implementation

Open Settings > Tap Sounds & Haptics > Tap the switch next to Vibrate on Ring so it turns gray > Tap the switch next to Vibrate on Silent so it turns gray

Reason

The vibration motor uses significantly more power than playing a ringtone. Disabling vibration saves battery on every notification.

Set Mail to Manual Fetch

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Stops email from constantly checking for new messages.

Implementation

Open Settings > Tap Mail > Tap Accounts > Tap Fetch New Data > Tap the switch next to Push so it turns gray > Scroll down and tap Manually

Reason

Push email keeps a constant connection to the mail server, draining battery. Switching to Manual means email only updates when you open the app.

Turn off Hey Siri

Difficulty: Energy gain:

Description

Stops the phone from constantly listening for voice commands.

Implementation

Open Settings > Tap Siri & Search > Tap the switch next to Listen for Hey Siri so it turns gray (off)

Reason

Hey Siri requires the microphone to be always active listening for the wake phrase, which continuously uses small amounts of power.
